On November 26, 2007, the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF) convened a multi-stakeholder dialogue in Clarens, Free State. The booklet is an edited version of this event.
Representatives from government, civil society, schools and the community came together to share lessons on implementing a caring school model for orphans and vulnerable children.
The discussion was facilitated by Dr Mothomang Diaho from the Foundation, and focussed on how schools could care for children made vulnerable by poverty, HIV/AIDS and other causes.
In 2006 the Foundation commissioned Save the Children UK to develop a “caring school” model in 25 schools in the Free State. This initiative arose out of an assessment done with the Free State Department of Education on the impact of HIV/AIDS on the educational sector in the province.
