The Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT) is of critical strategic importance in combating the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa. By its nature, however, the implementation of a PMTCT programme in South Africa faces myriad political, cultural, socio-economic, psychological and other challenges.
In the second of the HIV/AIDS Indabas, a discussion on the successes and difficulties encountered by people who are implementing and participating in the PMTCT programme, and the extent to which the media is reflecting and addressing their experiences, took place.
