Mr Nelson Mandela was pleased when His Serene Highness Prince Albert II of Monaco agreed to host a major fundraising initiative in Monaco for the benefit of the charities closest to their hearts. On September 1-2, 2007, two historical fundraising events will take place in the Principality of Monaco: a private lunch at the prince’s palace for 10 select donors, followed by a gala dinner attended by 350 guests each contributing €3,500. All funds raised will benefit Amade Mondiale, the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, and The Mandela Rhodes Foundation.
Acclaimed Academy Award-nominated, Emmy, Screen Actors’ Guild, and Golden Globe award-winning actress, Ms Alfre Woodard, will serve as the master of ceremonies at the prestigious gala dinner, with entertainment provided by Grammy Award-winning and Golden Globe-nominated singer, Mr Wyclef Jean, accompanied by accomplished South African performer Dozi, and talented emerging opera singer, Mr Siphiwo Ntshebe.
The dinner will be followed by an auction handled by auctioneers Sothebys. Items on auction at the event will include personal memorabilia donated to this end by the royal family of Monaco and Mr Mandela. Among others, items on auction will include the football boots used by Mr Wayne Rooney during the 2006 World Cup, one of the original vests worn by Mr Carl Lewis when winning an Olympic gold medal, an exquisite hand-made quilt containing off-cuts of Mr Mandela’s famous signature silk shirts, drumheads signed by the world-renowned singer and musician Santana, a statue of Mr Mandela and a piece of limestone originating from Robben Island where Mr Mandela spent 23 years of his 27 years of imprisonment.
The limestone is beautifully decorated with diamonds from South African soil, and is a once-off collector’s item. Prince Albert II will donate some personal belongings for the auction such as paintings, watches and a set of jewels. Guests attending the event will include high-profile dignitaries like Bono, Naomi Campbell, Morgan Freeman and others.
This is also an opportunity for the Mandela Charities to be introduced to new donors in the European Union. To purchase your ticket to the gala dinner please email Linda@amade-mondiale.org
