The trustees and staff of the Nelson Mandela Foundation were saddened to hear of the untimely passing of Tito Mboweni. He served South Africa in many different capacities with unflagging commitment. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time.
Mr Mboweni worked closely with Nelson Mandela throughout the 1990s, initially only within ANC structures and later also as democratic South Africa's first Minister of Labour. In this period, he was part of the inner circle of trusted advisers to Madiba which developed macro-economic and related policies for the country. (For 12 archival records of deep and intimate interviews given by Mr Mboweni in the 1990s, see the Foundation's website resource here.
In later years he remained a friend to both Madiba and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
We will miss his warmth and self-depreciating sense of humour. And his recipes and shoes!
Hamba kahle Ntate Mboweni. A life lived well is a life lived long enough.
