The Nelson Mandela Foundation conveys its hearty congratulations to Winnie Madikizela-Mandela on the occasion of her being awarded a National Order by the President of South Africa.
“Mrs Madikizela-Mandela dedicated her life to the liberation struggle in South Africa and suffered greatly for it,” said Sello Hatang, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation. He congratulated her on behalf of Professor Njabulo Ndebele, the Chairperson of the NMF, its Trustees and Staff.
As she is recuperating from back surgery at her home after her discharge on Tuesday from a Johannesburg Hospital, Mrs Madikizela-Mandela was unable to personally receive the Order of Luthuli. She was represented by her granddaughter, Zoleka.
Hatang added his congratulations to veteran freedom fighter Mac Maharaj who was also honoured among South African anti-apartheid activists, scientists and artists.
“It is important that we also acknowledge those from other countries who were given National Orders for their anti-apartheid work,” Hatang said, “We urge them to continue their assistance as our young country navigates its struggles ahead.”
