Today is a very sad day for all of us. South Africa has lost a father and an inspirational leader among men.

I remember as though it was yesterday the first time I met him, almost 28 years ago, soon after his release from prison.  He has been a part of my life ever since and became part of our family. He has enriched our lives and the lives of every person he has touched. For this we will always be grateful.

In an interview I did with Kathy’s mentor, Ismail Meer he said, “Kathy’s release from prison on 15 October 1989 symbolized that nowhere in the world the human spirit could be destroyed by a tyrant or oppressor. He emerged unscathed and ready to serve his people.”  Kathy continued to do this each day of his life.

We salute Kathy for his selfless leadership, his humanity, his quiet dignity and his commitment to the less fortunate people of our country and the world.

We join the millions of South Africans in celebrating Kathy’s amazing life.

Vanashree, Gyana, Kiyan and I send our sincerest condolences and love to Barbara Hogan, the Kathrada Family, his close friends and comrades.  We wish them strength and fortitude.
