Following the successful premiere of Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom on Sunday, 3 November, producer Anant Singh announced today that US President Barack Obama will host a special screening of the film at the White House in Washington on Thursday, 7 November. Singh and members of the Mandela family have been invited.
“It is an exceptional honour to have the film screening hosted by President Obama at the White House as it is a first for a South African film,” said Singh. “It is also of special significance as it connects Madiba and President Obama as statesmen who were responsible for major paradigm shifts in their respective countries and who have special places in the hearts of their people.”
The film is distributed in the United States by The Weinstein Company, which has achieved success with films such as Django, Silver Linings Playbook and The King’s Speech, all of which have received many awards and accolades.
Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom will be released in cinemas throughout South Africa on 28 November 2013.
