The Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, in partnership with Pikitup, recently launched a monthly clean-up campaign in Yeoville. The project encourages community members to take part in the initiative. The clean-up campaign seeks to assist in the reduction of crime and litter within the Johannesburg area. Mashaba said no investors will show interest in a dirty city, thus the need to establish the project.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation was invited to the clean-up campaign launch in Yeoville on 14 August 2017. NMF staff, together with the CEO, participated in the event, which started at noon and concluded at 1pm. The Foundation was joined by the A re Sebetseng Joburg! programme and the Democratic Alliance (DA). DA leader Mmusi Maimane was in attendance and signed a pledge of allegiance to the campaign.
Several other organisations were present, adding to a fun-filled event. The individuals present on the day were divided into groups, with each group allocated particular sections to clean up.
