Dec 18, 2008 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation is pleased to announce that one of the two books it released in 2008 to coincide with Mr Mandela’s 90th birthday has been honoured with an international award.
Hunger for Freedom: The Story of Food in the Life of Nelson Mandela by Anna Trapido and published by Jacana Media, in association with the Nelson Mandela Foundation, is the South African winner of the Gourmand World Cookbook Award.
“Edouard Cointreau, the President of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards informed us today from Madrid, Spain, that Hunger for Freedom is the South African winner in the category ‘Best Food Literature Book’,” said Achmat Dangor, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Speaking today, Cointreau called food “a natural cultural bridge”. “Cookbooks are also a bridge for peace, which Nelson Mandela symbolises today,” he added.
Hunger for Freedom will now go into the next round of the awards to compete against winners from around the world for the “The Best in the World” award.
The winners will be announced in May 2009 at an annual gala dinner event, the details of which will be announced in January 2009.
