The Nedbank Running Club used its athletic talent to demonstrate support for Mandela Day by winning gold in both the Men’s and Women’s Open relay category at the second Kaya FM 67km Relay for Mandela Day.
This year’s sold out event took place on Sunday 13 July and saw more than 17 000 participants create the biggest corporate relay ever seen in Africa.
For the second year in a row, Nedbank Running Club dominated the Open Relay, taking gold in both the Men’s and Women’s categories. Discovery Athletic Club took gold in the Mixed open relay.
In the Corporate Relay event Sanjo Construction defended their title, winning the Men's corporate relay category. Bathabile took gold in the Women's corporate relay while Entsika Consulting won the Mixed corporate category.
1 000 participants also took part in the 1.67km Family Fun Run/Walk.
Proudly hosted by the City of Jo’burg, the event was the result of a partnership between Kaya FM and the Nelson Mandela Foundation. All participants showed great comradery including numerous local celebrities, who all passed the baton between relay teams in a symbolic gesture of paying it forward and reaching out a hand to those less privileged members of society.
The Comrades Legends Team, comprising of past winners Bruce Fordyce (9 times champion), Nick Bester (1991),Frances van Blerk (1992), Claude Moshiywa (2013), and Ludwick Mamabola (2012), also took part and ran for a good cause. Although claiming to ‘take it easy and run for fun’, these Comrades Legends still managed to secure 14th position!
Kaya FM MD, Greg Maloka, said he was grateful for the amazing support of the station and this relay. “Today has been a remarkable event that honours the 67 years of commitment Tata made towards the freedom of South Africa. This event is about so much more than a relay – it is about the human spirit striving to make a difference. Kaya FM proudly puts the power of radio behind Madiba’s legacy.”
