Respect and freedom are two of the words people used most often when the Mail & Guardian asked them to describe Mandela's legacy.
The Mail & Guardian ran a Nelson Mandela legacy quiz on its website for two weeks. The quiz asked readers 12 questions on issues such as homosexuality, crime, women, abortion and HIV to see whether the answers they chose would be the same as those Nelson Mandela would have chosen.
The questions were compiled by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. The idea was that readers' scores (if people answered the questions honestly) would give an indication of how people's views on key issues are aligned with Mandela's.
The quiz also asked readers to describe what they think Mandela's legacy is.
Just over 2 400 responses were analysed for this graphic.
