It is with great sadness that we learned of the passing of former State Herald Dr Fred Brownell during the weekend. He had occupied that position between 1982 and 2002, and had developed an enviable international reputation in the field of vexillology (the study of flags).
Probably best known for his work on the new national flags of democratic South Africa and Namibia, he was a consummate professional and a widely published scholar. We will remember him as an unassuming professional colleague with a wicked sense of humour.
Our heartfelt condolences to Fred’s family and friends.
