Media statement: Nelson Mandela Foundation mourns the passing of Hugh Masekela
From: Nelson Mandela Foundation
Date: 23 January 2018
It is with a heavy heart that the Chairman, Trustees and staff of the Nelson Mandela Foundation have learned of the passing of Hugh Masekela. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and comrades at this most difficult time.
It is not enough to call Hugh Masekela a musician; Bra Hugh, as he was affectionately known, was a well-accomplished activist and musical icon. His commitment to the liberation of the globally oppressed people expressed through his artistry shaped both the struggle for social justice as well as the musical identity of South Africa.
While the Masekela family have lost one of their own, it is without any doubt that the music-loving people of the world have lost a part of their soul.
May this great son of Africa rest in peace.
