On 23 February 2015, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and Eqstra will formally handover a braille version of Nelson Mandela’s autobiography Long Walk to Freedom at Prinshof School in the CBD of Pretoria. This unique handover seeks to make Madiba’s legacy readily available to our visually impaired children.
Equal access to education and development is one of the fundamental cornerstone of our democracy which is something this initiative seeks to highlight. Dignity is built through the application of equal opportunities for all. To quote the father of our nation, “Our compatriots who are disabled challenge us in a very special way to manifest in real life those values of democracy.”
We need to avail such opportunities for our visually impaired children to be able to engage in our history and the values and lessons that founded our democracy so that we give them the chance as citizens to attain their goals and fulfil their dreams.
Nelson Mandela further said in 1994 that “Disabled children are equally entitled to an exciting and brilliant future.”
This is an exciting opportunity to bring these words to life.
