Annually, many thousands of individuals are made aware of the need for each South African to give up 67 minutes of our time for needy causes on one day of the year, in honour of Mr Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of active civil service to our nation.
This year will be a special day of commemoration as it marks the first Mandela Day after the passing of our beloved statesman. As a special tribute to Madiba, Stop Hunger SA will be marking this day with a special event, Meals in Memory.
The event will take place in two locations: the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, and the Canal Walk Shopping Centre in Cape Town.
We hope to involve over 4 000 volunteers to package 670 000 meals on the day, the largest number of meals packaged on a single day by Stop Hunger Now SA to date.
Each volunteer will package enough meals to feed a pre-school child three meals a week for the school year. This means 4 000 children will now receive a regular, nutritious meal.
We are inviting all companies, government departments, embassies, consulates, service organisations, faith-based organisations and sports clubs to sponsor one or more packaging lines for R9 000, and to volunteer a team of between 20 and 25 people per line to package the meals. Volunteers can be drawn from your staff, clients or members of your company or organisation. You can also sponsor a line on its own, and we will find volunteers through a public volunteer drive. Teams will package in shifts of 67 minutes throughout the day.
