On 18 July 2014, a Mandela Day campaign gained popularity on social media channel Twitter for promising to donate R6.70 for each new follow.
The Twitter campaign was retweeted by prominent personalities and local businesses and was endorsed by many more.
An example is this tweet by Audi Somerset West on 18 July 2014:
