The 28th Mandela Day container library was the centre of attention at the launch of Mandela Month 2013, which took place at 1pm on 1 July 2013 at the V&A Waterfront Clock Tower square.
The container library, which is destined for delivery to Alpine Primary School in Mitchells Plain later in July, stood prominently in the square, with the clocktower looming in the background, while members of the media and the general public looked on curiously.
As a crowd gathered around the container library, Zolani Mahola, lead singer of Freshlyground, sang her a cappella tribute to Nelson Mandela. She referred to him as the great, gentle giant, responsible for inspiring harmony and change in South Africa and the rest of the world.
She said that Mr Mandela makes us re-evaluate who we are, what we represent and how we can change our circumstances.
Mahola then challenged everyone to consider what they will be doing on Mandela Day to acknowledge and honour Madiba’s contribution towards peace and reconciliation.
