90.6 FM Stereo has arranged for eight choirs to perform for the elderly on Mandela Day, the choirs will also give out blankets. The event is to be held at the Mphatlalatsane Theatre in the Vaal Triangle.

Agape Seeds

ANC Members of Parliament and community members will be making donations of food parcels, clothes and books on Mandela Day.

ANC cadres, councillors, MPs, MPLs and the people of Kwa-Thema and Springs will be painting, cleaning and refurbishing schools, clinics and hospitals, as well as providing clothes and other basics to children in need.

Buhlomahlo

Volunteers at Buhlomahlo Children’s Home in Thembisa will be doing a door-to-door collection for clothing for underprivileged children between the ages of four and ten.

Child Welfare

Child Welfare South Africa, the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union, eThekwini Municipality and the University of KwaZulu-Natal will be holding a dinner at the Sahara Stadium Kingsmead, where a 67-minute pledge session will take place. Guests will use this time to dedicate 67 minutes to a community service programme of their choice.

City of Matlosana

The day’s event will start with participants doing community work at 15 different registered Disability Centres for 67 minutes. After this, all teams will converge at Folang Disability Centre in Kanana, Orkney for the main celebration.

The Executive Mayor will use the platform to address the participants as well as give orphans gifts and hand a R1- million cheque to persons with disabilities.

City of Neighbours

City of Neighbours will screen a Mandela video for young people who are part of the peace- building organisation, which became visible immediately after the xenophobic violence in South Africa last year.

Congress of South African Trade Unions

COSATU will be celebrating Mandela Day across the country with a series of activities from donating food to disadvantaged communities, planting tree or helping to clean homes in provinces across South Africa.

Delta Park vegetable tower

The Delta Park Vegetable Garden Club is encouraging people to grow vegetables by spending 67 minutes establishing, planning and starting to grow vegetables. When the vegetables or seedlings are fully grown they are then distributed to clinics, schools and soup kitchens in Johannesburg.

Department of Arts and Culture

The department will hold an entertainment concert in Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg, on July 18. There will be a variety of cultural performances, plus speeches by members of government.

Department of Correctional Services

Staff members will be delivering food and gifts to learners of Khwezi Farm School on July 20.

Department of Public Enterprises

Staff members will be visiting the Kingdom of Life shelter in Attridgeville. Staff members will be renovating the centre which currently accommodates 45 children from underprivileged families. Staff will also be donating food, books and blankets.

Department of Water and Environmental Affairs

The Minister will lead the staff of the Department of Water and Environmental affairs in a series of activities around the country in celebration of Mandela Day. The events all focus on the environment and range from tree planting, clean-up campaigns and recycling initiatives to open days at the Cape Town Marine Research Aquarium, introducing underprivileged children to Africa’s big five in the Kruger National Park and hosting the elderly at the Pretoria National Botanical Gardens.

Development Bank of Southern Africa

The Development Bank of Southern Africa’s staff members will be participating in community projects of their choosing. They are also donating unused books which will be distributed to underprivileged schools.

Food Bank South Africa

FoodBank South Africa will launch the 67 Minutes to end hunger in South Africa campaign as part of the Mandela Day celebrations on July 17.  The campaign will continue until 21 July 2009. Visit www.67minutes.org on Mandela Day to increase awareness of hunger in South Africa.

Former political prisoners

Former political prisoners will be visiting the Syferfontein shack community near Pacaltsdorp, in George, and providing community members with breakfast. This will be followed by a party for the children of St Mary’s Children’s Home in Rosemore and a lecture on Mr Mandela lecture at the Conville Civic Centre in George.

Friends of the Inner City

Johannesburg inner city residents will spend 67 minutes cleaning a building on the corner of Twist and Wolmarans street as part of a ‘Build Your Neighbourhood Campaign’. Residents will also donate building material and tools to be used in the reviving of Lorna Court, which burnt down a couple of ago leaving hundreds of residents homeless and destitute.

Free State Provincial Government activities

The Free State Provincial Government has put together an extensive series of events in celebration of Mandela Day. These range from helping with DIY, gardening and cleaning to donating bicycles to learners.

The Gauteng government will be hosting a series of events around Johannesburg, including gardening, helping at soup kitchens, cooking for the elderly and donating toys and books to underprivileged children.

Google South Africa

Google South Africa spent their 67 minutes at the United Cerebral Palsy Association in Johannesburg entertaining the residents and learning about the needs of people with cerebral palsy.

Great Park Synagogue

The Chief Rabbi and Ma’Afrika Tikkun are hosting a 67 minute drive to collect blankets, clothes and non-perishable food at the Great Park Synagogue on Sunday July 19.

A group of international volunteers will be laying a floor for the iKhaya Likababa, a home for orphans and vulnerable children, in Felixton, South Africa.

iLembe District Municipality 

The District of iLembe is home to many senior citizens but unfortunately most of our senior citizens live below the breadline so civil servants will be donating blankets, walking sticks and seed packs for subsistence farming. The municipality will also be holding a medical check-ups as well as a soup kitchen. The municipality will also be providing assistance to people with disabilities and the vulnerable children.

The Independent Development Trust (IDT)

The IDT has volunteered to build a house in a week in celebration of Mandela Day. Ten IDT staff members will travel to Mbuba village in KwaZulu-Natal, where they will build a house for an orphaned family of three currently living in a dilapidated mud rondavel.

Independent Democrat leader Patricia de Lille will be visiting Cape Town’s Nazareth House, which cares for vulnerable elderly people, adults and children who have been abandoned, abused or orphaned, while other members of the ID will spend time entertaining orphans and the elderly.

Inter-Active Technologies Ikageng Ministry

Inter-Active Technologies have chosen the Ikageng Ministry as part of their community service for Mandela Day and are hosting 67 orphan children from Ikageng on Monday July 20 and Wednesday July 22 in honour of Mandela Day. They will attend the Galleria Learning Centre in Florida, Roodepoort for the Illuminate Course.

Iziko Museums will host the “2010 Soccer Indaba”, its second such event. Thereafter, it has planned a youth clean-up campaign in Khayelitsha.

Together, these organizations will assist homeless people in the Johannesburg inner city by providing them with relevant services, assistance and care on Mandela Day.

The Johannesburg Festival Orchestra with Richard Cock will be going into Alexandra to give a children’s concert for Mr Mandela’s birthday. The concert will take place at AlexSan Kopano Community Centre with 1200 children.

KwaZulu-Natal Environmental Affairs and Rural Development

The Department of Environmental Affairs and Rural Development spent Mandela Day planting trees and establishing a vegetable garden at the Ghandi Hospital. 

Kulani Boxing Promotions

Kulani Boxing Promotions will host a professional boxing tournament at the Qunu Civic Hall. Boxers from Umtata will be meet East London boxers in the ring.

Librarian Association of South Africa

The Liberian communities in Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town will celebrate Mandela Day by cleaning up the environment and areas surrounding the libraries.

Mandela Organisation Activity

The Mandela Organisations will be active on Mandela Day in their respective areas of work. The Nelson Mandela Foundation, through its Centre of Memory and Dialogue will convene as part of its ongoing series, a community conversation in Khayelitsha to address issues of xenophobia.

Other Nelson Mandela Foundation staff will spend at least 67 minutes of their time on various community-based projects.

The Nelson Mandela Institute for Education and Rural Development, with the University of Fort Hare, will organise volunteers to renovate a local high school in Alice and clean up the town.

The Mandela Rhodes Foundation will be part of a series of ubuntu workshops in Cape Town that aim to explore issues of diversity and the spirit of ubuntu in the workplace.

The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund will honour and celebrate its Founder’s example and legacy through continuous support of programmes that affect the lives of children.  The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund currently supports 74 programmes across the country.

Matete Matches Secure Care Centre

Matete Matches Secure Care Centre, a state-run institution that cares for and protects detained juveniles awaiting trial, will partner with Ward 09 of Moqhaka Municipality in Kroonstad to celebrate Mandela Day. The two organisations will donate warm clothes, shoes and other garments to the needy and vulnerable members of the community on July 17.

Merafong Library has asked members of the community to donate information resources to the library. These will be donated to communities that do not currently have access to library resources.

Mindset Network

Non-profit organisation Mindset Network will be donating a digital library system to 67 underprivileged schools around South Africa as part of its Mandela Day contribution. The digital library provides educational content for the physical sciences, mathematics, English, mathematical literacy, information technology and other critical subjects, and consists of more than 280 hours of video lessons and 96 interactive multimedia lessons, with support softcopy worksheets.

Moyo restaurants will be taking party packs, with hats, noise blowers and the famous Moyo crunchies, face painters and drummers to the Umthombo Street Children in Durban and the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital in Johannesburg. The Robben Island Museum will be celebrating the birthday of Mr Mandela in partnership with the Cape Town Routes Unlimited, Anglican Church and Aquila Game Reserve. The celebration will be in line with the wish of the Nelson Mandela Foundation that we commit to a 67-minute social responsibility project in celebration and commemoration of his 67 years of uninterrupted involvement in the struggle for liberation. Staff at the South African embassy in Tokyo, Japan spent time at the Swan Bakery teaching the disabled staff members how to prepare traditional South African dishes like milk tart and babotie.

SAQA aims to promote the culture of reading among children by donating children’s books to two homes for HIV/AIDS orphans. The staff will spend at least 67 minutes reading to the children.

Unisa Women’s Forum

The Executive Committee of the Unisa Women’s Forum will launch the “Living the Madiba Legacy – Women in Academia share their experiences” at the Principal’s Annual Empowerment Dinner on August 7, 2009.  The project will use vignettes from women in academia to reflect upon and provide social commentary and critique about how their struggles and achievements resonate with those of Mr Mandela.
