On Friday, 4 September 1 264 children gathered at the Isiziba Primary School in Tembisa for the opening of the Long Walk to Freedom Library, which was made possible through the partnership of Saray Khumalo, Momentum and the Mandela Bangle Programme via Participate for Good, the public benefit organisation.
Preparation of the library had been happening for weeks. The Momentum Multiply team painted the library on the 28 August and sourced fantastic bean bags made by local women using recycled materials, as well as chairs and tables for the reading corner.
Two hundred pencil cases were made from recycled Momentum banners, filled and given to the school to be handed out for achievement and motivation of the kids.
VIP guests included Saray Khumalo, who has steadfastly raised money for this library through her Ubuntu Everest 2015 campaign, Zureida Ebrahim, CEO of Momentum Multiply, Zaziwe Manaway and Swati Dlamini – two of Nelson Mandela’s granddaughters – and Nelisiwe Hlope of Soulcity.
The Soul Buddyz club kids provided entertainment.
Hlubi Mboya, Mandela charity champion and ambassador, got the children excitedly involved, while Robert Coutts, CEO of the Mandela Bangle Programme shared statistics about reading and education, whereafter Khumalo officially opened the library.
The library is well-stocked with books and magazines. Stock donations were received from the Rotary Humanitarian Centre in Bedfordview (900 books); Magz in Johannesburg (250 magazines); and the Mandela Bangle Programme (200 Zulu and Sesotho readers sourced from Qualibooks Naledi). The library also received 10 footballs and 200 comics about a school teacher called Urban Legend who protects children.
