On 25 July 2014, students, teachers and KPMG staff members applauded the opening of a KPMG Family for Literacy (KFFL) library at Parktown Public School in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
Situated on the outskirts of derelict Hillbrow, the school has over 800 pupils and also services the surrounding disadvantaged community.
The library launch and opening represents the culmination of KPMG’s 2014 book drive, a Mandela Day initiative that saw hundreds of age- and language-appropriate reading material donated at KPMG offices around the country and donated to Parktown Public School.

KPMG aims to tackle childhood illiteracy via its Family for Literacy project. The programme provides Foundation Phase learners living in disadvantaged communities with books.
According to the KFFL, the majority of children from low-income families have no books in their homes or classrooms, and direct access to books is extremely limited. As such, children in impoverished areas have far fewer literacy and language experiences at home, and enter school at a disadvantage.
On Mandela Day 2013, KPMG contributed R10 000 worth of books to Salvazione Christian School.
