On 10 December 2014, representatives from the South Korean Embassy made a book contribution of a variety of rich reading sources to the value of R25 000 to the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Mandela Day Literacy for Leadership initiative in commemoration of Nelson Mandela on the first anniversary of his passing.

This donation will contribute significantly to the Foundation’s ongoing Mandela Day Container Library projects.

The books were handed over by Mr Heesoo Dan at the Foundation.

Last year, Mr Heesoo Dan and Mr John Lee of the South Korean Embassy showed their support by handing over copies of the children's version of Long Walk to Freedom for community Mandela Day container libraries.

Nelson Mandela’s vision of a democratic South Africa called for a country of literate and empowered citizens. Key to his dream was the emancipation of South Africa’s youth, making it possible to give our young leaders an opportunity to improve their lives and those of others.

In line with this goal, the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Literacy for Leadership and Mandela Day Container Library projects drive the provision of traditional and technological literacy programmes with skills development. These programmes are an ongoing initiatives to promote literacy amongst the youth in South Africa as a vital life skill. To date the library project has facilitated the opening of some 65 permanent libraries at impoverished schools across South Africa.

Members of the public are encouraged to donate books for the Mandela Day library programme via www.bookpeople.co.za/nelson-mandela-drive/. Books may also be dropped off at select Cotton On stores and the Foundation’s Centre of Memory, 107 Central Street, Houghton, Johannesburg.
