July 22, 2009 – The St Teresa’s Mercy School in Johannesburg has marked Mandela Day by committing to ensuring its environment is safe for its learners, parents, teachers and visitors. The school’s Learners Volunteer Safety Cadets are doing this in gratitude for Nelson Mandela’s 67 years of activism, and are challenging all other South African schools to establish learner volunteer safety teams too.
The Nelson Mandela Foundation is pleased to have received this commitment from the school.
This is one example of many projects throughout South Africa that have been inspired by Mandela Day. The Nelson Mandela Foundation applauds these initiatives and encourages others to come forward with their stories and commitment to continue working for 365 days a year.
