Invitation to Cover: Making Cities a Home, achieving urban land reform
From: Nelson Mandela Foundation
Date of publication: 6 July 2021

The Nelson Mandela Foundation will be convening a virtual dialogue with keynote speaker Minister Patricia de Lille, who will also be in conversation with Adv Tembeka Ngcukaitobi. The dialogue is entitled ‘Making cities a home: Achieving urban land reform’, and aims to give attendees a better understanding of the government’s planning in relation to urban land reform, to increase awareness about the need to focus on the urban dimension of land reform as well as provide a platform for the public to engage with the urban land reform agenda. This dialogue forms part of the Mandela Month activities, which this year is themed ‘The rule of law and food for all’.

This dialogue will also officially launch three papers on urban land reform which the Nelson Mandela Foundation has commissioned with the Development Action Group and the Socio-Economic Rights Institute. The aim of these papers is to stimulate informed discussion and debate on different models for urban land reform in South Africa. The commissioned papers cover the following topics:

  • An urban land reform model: Unlocking well-located publicly-owned land to deliver affordable rental housing in South African urban areas
  • Urban land redistribution: A proposed approach to equitable access to urban land
  • Urban tenure security: A proposed approach to urban land tenure reform

These papers are available at this link.
