High Commissioner Gupta receiving the Legacy Champion certificate from Achmat Dangor

The Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, Achmat Dangor, handed over a Legacy Champion certificate to the Indian High Commissioner Mr Virendra Gupta and Acting Consul General Mr Nandan Bhaisora, in recognition of the Government of India’s contribution to the Centre.

The Government of India was the major donor for the building in Houghton which housed Mr Mandela’s office from 2002 and which today is the Centre of Memory where Mr Mandela’s personal archive is kept.

“Without the Indian Government’s support, this facility would not have been possible,” said Dangor.

The Government of India is among a select group of donors to have received the Legacy Certificate, personally signed by Mr Nelson Mandela before his retirement.

The second phase of the Centre’s development commences in 2012. This includes expanding and upgrading archival capacity, the installation of a permanent exhibition and creating facilities for scholars and researchers to access the archives. The Centre will be relying on continued support from its institutional and other friends to make this possible.
