The colourful pop-art piece that won the class vote for best interpretation of Mr Mandela’s heritage
June 21, 2010 – A high school class at Lycée Godart-Roger – a school based in the Champagne-Ardenne region of France – has created a project for Mandela Day 2010, which takes place on July 18.
The school’s accountancy and communication class – which is made up of 17-year-old students who have been studying English for more than six years – watched Invictus and studied a Los Angeles Times review of the film, which focuses on how Nelson Mandela brought unity to a divided South Africa during the 1995 Rugby World Cup. They also studied the history of South Africa, Mr Mandela, the reconciliation between blacks and whites and the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
The students then created projects that demonstrated their understanding of Mr Mandela and his heritage.
Students worked on projects in groups and voted on their favourite one (pictured). The colourful pop-art piece illustrates the diversity of South Africa’s population and that of the world. The text sums up the courageous actions that Mr Mandela took to bring peace to South Africa.
In their message to Mr Mandela, the students say, “Nelson Mandela is a good man, a respectable man. He has changed the view of humanity towards black people.”
