“The joy of reading…is one that I have treasured all my life, and it is one I wish for all South Africans.” – Nelson Mandela
Improving literacy and numeracy skills is crucial to a child's ability to develop fully. These skills can help them live a satisfying and rewarding life and fully participate in society as they grow and mature.
This past month, the Nelson Mandela Foundation in collaboration with Literacy4life had our first reading programme for children. We are anticipating hosting one session every month and would like to do it not just in English but in more South African languages as well.
Lebohang Masango, poet and author of Mpumi’s Magic Beads, engaged the children and read the illustrated version of Long Walk to Freedom. She was joined by two Litercay4life ambassadors, Khwezi Tamakloe and Letabo Mkhari that participated in the reading and discussions. The children that attended walked away knowing more about Nelson Mandela than when they arrived.
Reading opens so many doors and lays the foundation for education and we are excited to add our contribution to this very important life skill.
