We were deeply saddened to hear today of the untimely passing of Dinilesizwe Sobukwe.
The Foundation got to know him well in 2011 when it worked with the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Trust (RMST) on an exhibition, titled Remember Africa, celebrating the life and work of Dini’s father, Robert Sobukwe, the first leader of the Pan Africanist Congress and a legendary South African patriot. Dini became a co-creator of the exhibition, contributing materials from the family archive, providing many insights, and offering hospitality at his home in Graaff-Reinet. We appreciated his warmth and dry sense of humour.
In the years after the launch of the exhibition at the Nelson Mandela Foundation, we worked with Dini to ensure that it travelled in South Africa and ultimately became a resource for the RMST. We applauded Dini’s commitment to securing for Graaff-Reinet (where his father was born and grew up) a fitting institutional Sobukwe tribute with meaningful public programming. He leaves a legacy.
We will miss him. Hamba kahle, mfowethu.
