We were saddened today to hear that Ntate Credo Mutwa has passed away. He lived a life that was very long and very richly textured. We send condolences to his family and the many people in South Africa and beyond who regarded him as a spiritual teacher.
His appreciation for the histories of southern Africa predating European colonisation and his promotion of knowledges rooted in those histories were important contributions to public discourse in our country. Madiba respected his work in these areas.
Ntate Mutwa passes at a time when the world is being challenged at every level by Covid-19. The histories and the knowledges he cherished could become critical resources for us both as we seek to rise to the challenge and as we begin to reimagine a South Africa, and a world, after the virus.
