Tournament director Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh thanked the Foundation for hosting the finals
April 20, 2009 – The Nelson Mandela Foundation hosted the finals of the African Schools Debating Championships today.
The international championships, which include teams made up selected of students from a number of African countries, are held annually to bring together the top regional schools debating teams. The competition, organised by the South African Schools Debating Board, has two finals, one a debate open to schools from South Africa and the other a debate contested between national teams.
Today’s finals were the culmination of a week-long event hosted by Johannesburg’s St John’s College.
The South African schools debate final pitted Pretoria Girls High School against a composite team comprised of St Dominic’s College and Heronbridge College, which was won by the composite team.
In the international debate, South Africa beat Botswana in the final.
Tournament director Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh opened the proceedings by thanking the Foundation for hosting the event in “the office of South Africa’s greatest leader”, Nelson Mandela.
