August 8, 2008 – The memory resources documenting Nelson Mandela’s life and times are fragmented and geographically scattered, both within South Africa and internationally, with resources embedded in various legal and other jurisdictions.

As a result, there are multiple stakeholders in the legacy of Nelson Mandela over and above the Nelson Mandela Foundation (NMF), something that Verne Harris, Programme Manager for Memory at the NMF, thinks is crucial for people to know.

To that end the NMF has developed links to a number of South African institutions that have either relevant archival holdings or a significant stake in the Mandela archive.

“The Nelson Mandela Foundation is just one of many organisations with a role to play and a stake in Madiba’s legacy,” Harris said. “Links are critical in making people aware of that reality.

“One of the key roles we have at the Nelson Mandela Foundation is to act as a convenor of a wide range of organisations. The key instrument available on a website is linkage.”
