On behalf of our Board of Trustees, the Nelson Mandela Foundation sends our condolences to the family, friends and comrades of the late Ayesha "Bibi" Dawood.
This selfless anti-apartheid activist was an accused along with Nelson Mandela and 153 others in the infamous 1956 Treason Trial.
Ms Dawood, 86, passed away in hospital in Worcester, Western Cape, today, 1 June 2014. She was buried by Muslim rites this afternoon.
She was among the first group of 65 who had charges of treason withdrawn on 10 January 1958.
She famously said: "It does not matter what race you belong to, we must all pull together. We shall not retreat."
Ms Dawood was part of a group of former triallists to participate in a reunion with Mr Mandela in Johannesburg in 2008.
Love in the Time of Treason: The Life Story of Ayesha Dawood, by Zubeida Jaffer, was published in 2008.
Her sacrifices for a free and democratic South Africa will never be forgotten.
Hamba kahle.
