On behalf of our Chairperson, Board of Trustees and staff of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, we would like to offer our condolences to the family and friends of Dr Neville Alexander, who passed away on 27 August 2012 at the age of 75.
Dr Alexander was a lifelong activist and champion of human rights, and spent ten years on Robben Island (1964 – 1974). His years on the island were spent with a small group of senior leadership from the liberation movements, including Nelson Mandela.
In later years Mr Mandela recognised Dr Alexander as a hero of the struggle.
“Neville Alexander has made an invaluable contribution to our country’s cultural and political life,” said Achmat Dangor, Chief Executive of the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory.
