On 8 December 2014 teachers and learners at Merrydale Primary School in Lentegeur in Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, received an early Christmas present – a Mandela Day container library.
Colourful and spacious, the pre-fabricated library facility was stocked with over 1 000 books.
Sponsored by Pick n Pay, with books sponsored by Pick n Pay and Breadline Africa, the educational facility is not only well poised to build a culture of reading among learners, but it also has the full support of the school Principal, school librarian and project manager Andre Nel from Pick n Pay.
Through the process of initiating and implementing this project, Pick n Pay Retailers project manager Andre Nel, wanted to ensure that the school library was well supported. He contacted Breadline Africa to make sure that the investment would become an impactful and sustainable one.
The principal, Mr Diljee and librarian, Georgina, are poised to work with all supporting partners in making this library a success. The librarian will be attending the Breadline Africa Annual Training where she will learn how best to manage and run a library for the school’s 1 128 learners.
Breadline Africa congratulates the school and it’s learners and looks forward to further developments with partners who value literacy among South Africa’s youth.
