July 5, 2010 – A group of South African and international celebrities will join a group of bikers this year for a five-day tour in support of Mandela Day.
From July 15 to 18, 2010, en route from Johannesburg to Cape Town – in the smallest villages and the biggest cities – local and international actors, adventurers, media gurus, sportsmen and women, singers and supporters will be giving of their time to promote Mandela Day and get involved in community initiatives.
This year the Nelson Mandela Foundation is making a special appeal to the country’s biking community. Bikers are asked to support the Mandela Day tour by performing a good service of some kind in their own home town and local communities. The bikers and their entourage, proudly supported by Vodacom, Spar and Absa, will be welcomed by town and city mayors across the country and then be put to work for 67 minutes on various community projects in each region.
The Mandela Day bikers include:
- Paul Mvulane Mnisi – previously known as Rudeboy Paul, presenter on YFM and now prominent businessman
- Jeremy Mansfield – The Rude Awakening 94.7 Highveld Stereo anchor
- Jack Devnarain – One of the leading actors in Isidingo
- Darren Kelfkens – Producer and former Egoli actor who played ‘Jo’
- Hanna Grobler – Survivor SA contestant and actress in “Getroud met Rugby”
- Sean Shipalana – Prominent businessman and owner of the first black owned Harley Davidson dealership in SA – Gold Rand Harley
- James Kilbourn – OFM presenter
- Marc Batchelor – Ex-Bafana player and presenter on Supersport
- Sithembiso Khoza – prominent business professional at the Development Bank of SA
The group will consist of both prominent and ordinary people supporting the cause of Mandela Day. Other high profile bikers will also join the initiative. These additional names will be confirmed at a later stage.
This year’s Mandela Day, July 18, celebrates the 92nd birthday of Nelson Mandela, and is a call to action for all South Africans to make a difference in the places in which they live and work. Declared ‘Nelson Mandela International Day’ by the United Nations last year, July 18 is one day in the year on which people across the globe band together to serve the communities around them and work toward a better tomorrow.
We are all urged to Make Every Day a Mandela Day.
