A new telephone and SMS scam using the Nelson Mandela Foundation’s name is making the rounds.
Please note that the Nelson Mandela Foundation does not provide cash rewards, and is not involved in a fundraising initiative through Vodacom or Capitec Bank.
Our informant was contacted by a “Mr Engelbrecht from Vodacom”, and was alerted to an SMS informing her of a cash reward for being a loyal Vodacom client. In order to claim the reward, the woman was asked to pay R165 airtime and donate R450 to the Nelson Mandela Foundation via a Capitec account.
Once these monies were received, a PIN (personal identification number) would supposedly be provided and R10 000 would be paid to her, from Vodacom and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.
Please ignore any such phone calls or SMSs.
