The Nelson Mandela Foundation is saddened by the passing of the former President of Ghana, Jerry Rawlings. We send our condolences to the people of Ghana as well as the Rawlings family.
Madiba had a close working relationship with Rawlings in the 1990s as South Africa and Ghana forged partnerships on a number of fronts. During that time, Madiba considered Ghana “an island of political and economic stability” that was “at the forefront of efforts to build an African peace-keeping capacity.”
We will remember former President Rawlings’ many contributions to continental diplomacy.
