Annual Lecture 2005 – Wangari Maathai
The third Nelson Mandela Annual Lecture was delivered by Wangari Maathai on 19 July.
The venue was the Nelson Mandela Theatre in Braamfontein, Johannesburg.
The topic of her lecture was “Rise up and walk!” At the core of her lecture was a fervent message of empowerment and African pride. Wishing Mr Mandela a happy birthday for 18 July, Maathai said what the continent needed most were people who were passionate about Africa.
Maathai was the founder of the Green Belt Movement and the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She authored four books, and served as Kenyan Deputy Minister of Environment.
