Vorster, B.J.

1915 - 1983

Vorster was born in the Eastern Cape and educated at Stellebosch. He was one of the founders of the Ossewa Brandwag. He came to parliament in 1953 and in 1961 he was appointed Minister of Justice. He introduced the Sabotage Act and other measures against subversion. He became Prime Minister in 1966 after Verwoerd's assassination. In 1978 the Information scandal forced him to resign as Prime Minister and shortly afterwards he resigned as State President.
