Derby-Lewis was a founder of the breakaway Conservative Party from the National Party (NP) in 1982. He served on the President's Council.

He was accused, with Janus Walus, of the assassination of Chris Hani in 1993. His application for amnesty was denied and he is currently serving his prison sentence.
