1906. Mining Regulations

These prescribed "a minimum of 2 lb. of mealie-meal and 1/2 oz. of salt a day, supplemented by 2 lb. of bone-free meat or fish, 1 lb. of soupmeat, 1 lb. of vegetables and lIb. of sugar or treacle a week" (Simons & Simons 1969: 84). These regulations also "compelled owners to provide change house for white and Coloured miners, but not for Africans" (Simons & Simons 1969: 84).
